Oh, I remember this time! I come from a long line of preachers and Christian ministers from my father’s side of the family. My grandmother played piano for Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker when they were upstarts performing puppet shows for children. And my mother’s mother sure did love her Jimmy Swaggart records. But, our immediate family (like most preachers, I suspect) treated Christian celebrity and televangelists with suspicion. We hoped for the best, but would kind of suck through our teeth and shake our heads in conversation about the subject.
Thank you, Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield for putting such rich human dimensions on these personalities that have been so easily caricatured. This one is a big thumbs-up for me!
